The Proposed Sand to Snow National Monument

Reporting from Barstow - Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) says she plans to introduce legislation today to establish two national monuments on roughly 1 million acres of Mojave Desert outback that is home to bighorn sheep and desert tortoises, extinct volcanoes, sand dunes and ancient petroglyphs.
The Mojave Trails National Monument, would prohibit development on 941,000 acres of federal land and former railroad company property along a 105-mile stretch of old Route 66, between Ludlow and Needles.
The Sand to Snow National Monument, about 45 miles east of Riverside, would cover about 134,000 acres of federal land between Joshua Tree National Park and the San Bernardino National Forest in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Its diverse habitats range from desert scrub to yellow pine forests 9,000 feet above sea level.
Volunteer of the Year Award
Dee & Betty Zeller Garner Volunteer of the Year Award
The Morongo Valley CSD Board of Directors faced a tough challenge recently when they had to select the Volunteer of the Year. Our Valley boasts many, many truly worthwhile candidates. The Directors thoughtfully considered how many residents and visitors the nominees impacted, the length of the nominee's service and the nature of the contributions.
Dee & Betty Zeller, onsite managers of the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, were ultimately named the Volunteers of the Year and presented the Osborne Award. The Zeller's contributions go well beyond the 'normal' site host duties. Dee leads weekly bird watching trips, acts as host, security and manages the recycling program. Betty is involved with the administrative aspects of education, trip reservations, facility usage reservations and volunteer coordination. The fact that the Zellers are on duty from dawn to dusk, 365 days per year, was the deciding factor in naming them Volunteers of the Year.
The Chuck Osborne Volunteer of the Year Award was created by Park Commissioner Hap Trowbridge in 2008. Osborne's 14+ years of volunteer service to the CSD, parks, baseball and events, inspired the development of the award. The Morongo Valley Children's Library founder, Cheryl Jordan, was the first recipient. The Morongo Valley is so fortunate to benefit from the contributions of the aforementioned dedicated volunteers.

The Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the Hummingbird Moon Lodge for taking over the Citizen of the Month election duties. They took over this community project for the Chamber in October of this year. If you have a nomination, please contact Laurie Geeson at lauriegeeson25 at gmail.com or 760-363-6681.
