Morongo Valley Chamber of Commerce
Tuesday, November 2, 2004 – Morongo Valley Social Club
  1. The meeting called to order at 6:40 p.m.,

  2. A quorum of officers was present
  3. Pledge of Allegiance

  4. Corrections, additions to the minutes of the previous meeting There were no additions or corrections to the minutes. Moved and seconded to approve the minutes as distributed; passed unanimously.
  5. Treasurers Report – Johann Von Flue stated there was some $4222.30, end of November, in the treasury and $413.00 were deposited from Button Sales and Garage Sale Income.
  6. Monument Model Presentations – A number of residents presented their models for the proposed Morongo Valley Welcome Monument including: Barbara Sliger, Donna Weeks and Michael Pritchard. More models are expected. The committee will discuss a possible extension of the time to submit models.
  7. November 11 participation – Leslie Rotstein noted we would need help moving chairs, etc. from the elementary school to Covington Park and back. Also, help would be needed to set up the room for the evening’s event.
  8. Discussion on Statement of Purpose – after a brief discussion it was moved, seconded and unanimously approved to have the statement of purpose be: It is the goal of the Chamber to act as a strong voice for business in the community. Through the commitment of our members we strive to enhance the business, economic and social climate of our unique community. This statement will be added to the membership application and other printed publications.
  9. Clean Team Report – Linda Bailey indicated that some 18 people showed up for the last Clean Team event in October. They Team was presented with bright yellow T-Shirts from San Bernardino County Solid Waste Management Division. The next event will be Saturday, November 20 at 7 a.m. Further, she indicated the Team would be talking to Circle K about making sure their dumpster lids are closed and possibly locked. When the dumpster lids are left open trash blows out of the bins.
  10. Bruce Davis Report – Linda Bailey indicated that Davis thanked the community for their participation in the Community Plan Update. Also, she said dumpsters are available for cleaning up illegal dumpsites. Also, Community Development Block Grants are available for “under-grounding utilities” with a deadline of December 14 for application. Davis said to Bailey that Morongo Valley was second on their list of communities to receive consideration under “Rule 20-A” which provides for the under-grounding of utilities. James Hagerty agreed to do some research on what it takes to apply for the funds.

  13. Participation in Village Fest in Palm Springs – Leslie Rotstein indicated Frank Bebb with the Yucca Valley Chamber had met with the Executive Committee. Bebb said that YV C of C now has a booth at Village Fest in Palm Springs. If members of the Morongo Chamber wish to participate or volunteer they should contact the YV Chamber for details. Bebb indicated it had been a very successful venture for the Chamber.
  14. Announcements – James Hagerty told the group about the Morongo Basin Arts Festival. He indicated it’s a growing event and is bringing the area a lot of notice.
  15. Other Business –
    1. There was a general discussion about the Chamber’s role in the community. It was noted that the community is growing and new businesses are starting to open up. There were questions about how Code Enforcement reviews the opening of new businesses. It was agreed to have Code enforcement attend a full Chamber Meeting in the future to discuss mutual concerns.
    2. Tim Parrott asked the group to consider a proposal by Johann Von Flue to lower the price of Booster Members to $20 a year from $30. Von Flue had suggested the change because Booster members are not allowed to vote except for the one Booster member on the Board. It was moved, seconded and unanimously approved to change the membership fee for Booster members to $20 a year.
    3. There was a general discussion about inviting the Fiesta Days Committee to the next Executive Committee Meeting to look at how the Chamber and the Committee can work together in the future.
    4. Next Meeting – the meeting will be held at the regular date/time of Tuesday, December 7 at 6:30 p.m. – Covington Park.
    5. Adjournment – The meeting was adjourned to the social hour at 7:45 p.m.
